Sample Gift Language for your Will or Revocable Living Trust

A gift to The Scripps Research Institute in your will or revocable trust enables you to support our mission and make a difference in the lives of future generations. A bequest:

  • is easy to arrange.
  • will not alter your current lifestyle in any way.
  • can be easily modified to address your changing needs.

The following language may be helpful:

Sample of unrestricted bequest language:

I give (insert dollar amount, property to be given, percentage of the estate, or "the remainder of my estate") to The Scripps Research Institute, a nonprofit corporation, tax identification number 33-0435954, headquartered at 10550 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, California, 92037, for its general use and purposes.

Sample of restricted bequest language:

I give (insert dollar amount, property to be given, percentage of the estate, or "the remainder of my estate") to The Scripps Research Institute, a nonprofit corporation, tax identification number 33-0435954, headquartered at 10550 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, California, 92037, to support (insert designation, campus or purpose) at The Scripps Research Institute. You may wish to direct your bequest gift to an endowed fund which will last in perpetuity.

If your gift is $50,000 or greater, you have the option to establish your own endowed fund which can hold your name or the name of a loved one. If your gift is less than $50,000, you can supplement an existing endowed fund. In endowed funds, the principal is held in perpetuity, with part of the annual earnings generating ongoing support for programs designated by the donor.

Retirement Plan Beneficiary Language

You may name The Scripps Research Institute (Tax ID #33-0435954) as a beneficiary of your IRA or other qualified retirement benefits. Donors should consult with their tax advisor regarding the tax benefits of such gifts.

Naming The Scripps Research Institute as the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan asset such as a 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh or profit-sharing pension plan will accomplish a charitable goal while realizing significant tax savings. It can be costly to pass such assets on to heirs because of heavy tax consequences. By naming The Scripps Research Institute as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, the donor maintains complete control over the asset while living, but at the donor's death the plan passes to support The Scripps Research Institute free of both estate and income taxes.

Making a charitable gift from your retirement plan is easy and should not cost you any attorney fees. Simply request a change-of-beneficiary form from your plan administrator. When you have finished, please return the form to your plan administrator and notify The Scripps Research Institute. We can also assist you with the proper language for your beneficiary designation to The Scripps Research Institute.
